How to plan a sustainable kitchen

From using local produce to avoiding food waste, there are many ways to be more sustainable in the kitchen. Sustainable thinking can also be applied to kitchen design: whether you are looking to plan a completely new kitchen or are looking for ways to upgrade your old kitchen, we have some tips and ideas to make it more sustainable.

Materials

Could you upcycle your existing furniture to create a fresh new look? Sometimes the existing cabinetry can be reused and you could just replace the doors for a fresh new look. You can also integrate sustainable materials in your kitchen by using for example local renewable wood or recycled materials. In our Sustainable Kitchen you see here, we have reused existing steel cabinetry and added fronts made from a combination of birch plywood and an ash face veneer, two woods that originate in Europe, where this particular kitchen was photographed. The use of quality wood gives a well-loved and well-used kitchen much needed longevity.

Energy consumption

When planning a new kitchen and you are including new appliances, look out for energy ratings of the appliances in question. The good news is that appliances have been getting more and more efficient in recent years. In addition to energy ratings, it also pays off to look at the functions of your new appliances.

Integrated Dishwashers - Did you know?

54 billion bacteria cells

A study found just a suger-cube sized piece of kitchen sponge contains 54 billion bacteria cells.

Remove the need for a sponge on your countertop and let the dishwasher take over.

Hotter than the Sahara Desert

Selected dishwasher cycles use water as hot as 70 degrees that your hands can't tolerate. Such high temperatures make light of tough baked-on stains and helps to kill bacteria.

Save water, save money, save the planet

NEFF Dishwashers do not completely fill up with water. In fact, they are so efficient they can use as little as 6.5 litres for an entire cycle

Quicker than you think

Not all dishwasher programmes are between two and four hours long. NEFF appliances include a range of quicker programmes to fit in with your needs.

Quick 45 and 1 hr programmes, and VarioSpeed Plus option which can shorten a programme by up to 66%.

Clean and dry

Modern dishwashers are capable of drying as well as cleaning your dishes. Zeolith technology is a naturally occurring energy efficient method of adding warm air to the dishwasher to perfectly dry the load.

AquaStop

Did you know that a leaked BSH dishwasher damaged the valuable carpets of a Schweinfurter directors office and that this event was the reason for the development of AquaStop?

The AquaStop is a BSH invention!

A Boiling Hot Offer

A BOILING HOT OFFER!

Urban Haus Design Studio are pleased to announce the arrival of the brand new Quooker Fusion Flex tap in our Cheshire showroom. What’s more, to celebrate the new arrival we are offering new customers this fantastic tap absolutely FREE with every kitchen purchased for £9995.00 or more, excluding installation (see below for Terms & Conditions). At a retail price of £1150.00 this is an unbelievable deal, by any standards.

Do I need a Quooker Fusion Flex though? Well, you decide….

quooker1.png

The Flex is the latest innovation from Quooker. A genuine multi-purpose boiling-water tap. It provides boiling water at 100°C in an instant, as well as acting as a standard hot and cold mixer tap. All this, with the added bonus of a flexible hose you can draw from the elegant, curved spout. This makes it easy to rinse and clean at any point in the sink.

Aside from the practical advantages offered by the Quooker Flex, it has three brilliant safety features that will appeal to everyone. To get the Quooker Flex to supply boiling water, you must first engage the double push turn feature, and when the flexible hose is drawn from the hose, the hot water stop ensures no nasty accidents for your family. Not only that, the spout is insulated, so there is no chance of burning fingers as you adjust direction. Check out the video below.

quooker8.jpg

Nearly, but not quite….

There are lots of taps out there that provide ‘near boiling’ or 98°C or even 88°C water, but the Quooker is the only product on the market that delivers 100°C instant boiling water.

So what’s the significance of 100°C then? Well, for the modern family home the promise of 100°C boiling water is invaluable. If you have a baby or a medical condition, water delivered through the tap is both sterile and bacteria-free, so it can be used for baby bottles and even to sterilise medical equipment. If you are a keen chef, you can blanche those vegetables in an instant.

Perhaps most important of all though, the Quooker Fusion Flex will make the perfect cup of tea! Those taps that offer a pale imitation of the Quooker simply cannot compete when it comes to creating the perfect brew; hot and fresh every time. It is the only tap that genuinely renders the kettle a thing of the past. No plug, no flex, no filling and waiting and boiling. Two presse and a twist and you’ve got boiling water, dispensed instantly.

How do they do it though…..?

Quooker hot tap technology is covered by a  number of patents that prevent others using a similar system. The stainless steel tank, that sits neatly in the sink base unit, has revolutionary vacuum insulation and thermos technology, heating the water to a temperature of 110°C before it is dispensed. The Quooker tank is also fitted with a HiTAC (High Temperature Activated Carbon) water filter. Water that flows through this active carbon filter leaves all the impurities behind in the filter. This removes from the water any chlorine, bacteria, pesticides and other contamination which can negatively impact the taste of water. With a Quooker in your home, you can enjoy the best and the most delicious boiled water every day. Most people taste the difference straight away!

Which worktop?

Kitchen Worktops in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire: Quartz - Granite/Marble - Wood – Corian - Glass

Choosing the right surface for your kitchen worktop can be difficult, simply because there are so many different options to choose from. Whether you are installing a new kitchen or upgrading your existing one, Urban Haus Kitchen Design Studio, in the very heart of the Greater Manchester and Cheshire conurbation, can help you choose the right material and install your perfect kitchen worktop. The most widely available types of kitchen worktops are: Granite, Laminate, Wood, Quartz (Silestone), Glass and Corian.

Granite and Marble

Granite and marble worktops are popular choices for kitchens. Granite is available in an extensive range of colours and finishes, which is perfect for those looking for a worktop to match their colour scheme. Granite is resistant to water and robust; but you will need a specialist fabricator to install and you'll find granite can be one of the more expensive options on the market. There are two types of finishes for granite worktops: Pebbled and Veined. Pebbled worktops have tiny dots of colour spread throughout the granite and veined have thin strips of colour running through the stone.Looking for granite worktops in Manchester, call us now.

Marble worktops have a soft beautiful finish and striking designs. Marble is easily recognised due to the prominent veins that run through the stone and is available in around 35 different colours, including white. However, marble is a soft stone and is not scratch resistant nor as durable and long lasting as the granite worktop. Because of this, marble worktops can work out significantly cheaper than granite worktops.

Solid Wood (Timber)

A solid wood worktop can add warmth, elegance and character to your kitchen. Wood has a timeless and rustic beauty that is a perfect choice for both modern and traditional kitchens. Wooden worktops can be customised to suit your individual preferences, as wood is easy to work with and many shapes and designs can be created by an experienced carpenter or joiner, as well as by more mechanised processes. Timber worktops are relatively easy to maintain, repair and install and can last for many years. You will need to treat and oil your timber worktop with the changing of the seasons, but the effort reaps reward through the timeless beauty of wood. At Urban Haus we are proud of our relationship with Spekva from Denmark, who are among the leading producers of wooden worktops in Europe.

Laminate

Laminate is the most affordable choice of kitchen worktop. They are made by wrapping a plastic laminate coating around composite fibreboard, creating a lightweight surface which is hard wearing and open to many designs. The laminate can come in a wide range of colours and designs which can imitate other materials such as wood, quartz and different stones. Laminate offers good scratch resistance and is cheaper to replace in the event of damage than other surfaces. Laminate is also a very hygienic material. Bacteria can hide in the natural grains of wood and tiled worktops and these can build up over time. Laminate is low maintenance, cost effective and offers a free choice for design. However, although scratch resistant, laminate can damage fairly easily through water or heat compared to natural stones such as granite.

Here's one of our recent installations. The concrete style laminate worktop wraps round the drawer units, and a contrasting copper coloured laminate forms the breakfast bar area at the rear.

One of the great benefits of laminate is that the fitter can install on the day the kitchen goes in. No need to wait for template and fabrication off site. What's more, our friends in Germany cut and edge the laminates exactly, so that on-site cutting is kept to a bare minimum, and the fitting process is speeded up significantly.

Quartz (Silestone)

Silestone is a well known brand name for quartz worktops, and at Urban Haus we are proud to offer all the services and products of an Elite Studio. Quartz worktops are man-made with natural quartz which is combined with resins to make a hard wearing surface; similar to granite with smooth, textured, matt and glossy finishes. Quartz worktops are available in an extensive range of colours which gives you freedom of choice when it comes to design and colour schemes for your kitchen. Many people mistake quartz for granite, because they are very similar in terms of appearance but they are not the same. Although both are durable, quartz is less likely to incur scratches and stains due to its stronger surface structure. Quartz is waterproof and non-porous, and this means it is almost impossible for stains to get embedded under the worktop surface. Any liquids that are spilt will not be absorbed, unlike granite. This makes quartz very hygienic and easy to clean. Quartz worktops are more expensive than other materials due to the work involved in the template, fabrication and installation, but the cost is worth it. Quartz worktops are very durable and can look as good as new decades later. This makes them a highly popular choice of worktop for households. Looking for Quartz Worktops Stockport, call us now.

Corian

Corian is a well known brand of solid surface worktop. Corian worktops are made by applying acrylic resin to a composite fibreboard core. They can come in a range of over 100 colours and can be made in any shape or size imaginable, hence the higher price tag. Although they are not as scratch proof as granite or quartz, they are very cheap and easy to repair, as you can simply sand down any scratches or scuffs. Although Corian worktops have some resistance to heat, they do not withstand it as well as granite or quartz. Corian is made from acrylic which is a type of plastic ,so it is never going to withstand high exposure to heat. However, when choosing a worktop, bear in mind that all manufacturers advise against exposing their surfaces to heat.

You will find often find Corian in the cleanest of environments. It can be moulded , shaped and jointed endlessly, and one of the main features that appeals to health professionals and home owners alike is that a Corian surface can be completely seamless. There is no opportunity for bacteria and germs to hide in the usual nooks and crannies of the kitchens worktop. At the Urban Haus studio you can see for yourself the range of colours and the practicality offered by choosing a Corian worktop. We are Corian Home design Partner.

This sink is made from Corian, and forms a seamless whole within the worktop itself. The ultimate in hygiene.

Let there be light.....

Light is a key element in the design of any kitchen. It changes any room, giving new life to wasted space.

When we first visited John & Suzanne, they had a low flat ceiling, small windows to the gable end, a larger window at one end of a long room, and a back door they never used. For a bright friendly family, this gloomy space was no place to spend their precious free time. So when we re-designed the roof, we brought as much light in as we could. It was vaulted along the full length, so the roof lights could go in. You'll see the virtue of opening up the reveals to let as much light into the far corners as possible. The arched plasterwork softens the shadows at the highest point of the room.

20170427_113346.jpg

Where the couch now sits there used to live an old corner cupboard, where those hiddens gems you never use get left unloved. Now the light streams down over the new couch, where the family can sit, read, chat, watch the TV. In a contemporary kitchen like this, where the colours range from white through mid grey to anthracite, you need colour to give life and contrast, and where better to bring out the colour than under the light from the roof window and the new patio doors?

20170427_113521.jpg

Light has given this room new life. Light is an invaluable element to any kitchen design. It bounces off even the darkest surface in Suzanne & John's new kitchen, and the simplicity of white emulsion means it reflects back from every wall and ceiling. The house is transformed now, but there will be other rooms that are a little jealous. Where the family once spent their free time in lighter parts of their home, they are drawn to the kitchen now. Some of the old haunts will be left behind. We are all drawn to the light.
